Syracuse, N.Y. — Two Syracuse firefighters were injured Sunday morning when a fire ripped through a South Side home, badly damaging the house and displacing three people, firefighters said.
The firefighters were burned while fighting the fire in the attic, according to Syracuse Fire Department spokesperson Matt Craner. Both were transported to a hospital and released later Sunday.
Firefighters arrived around 10:30 a.m. to find smoke coming from the attic of the two-and-a-half-story home at 213 McLennan Ave.
A contractor working on the roof started the fire, Craner said.
Firefighters moved hoses to the attic, though Craner said they were met with “extreme heat” and deteriorating conditions. They moved to fight the fire from outside the home and sprayed water from several large hoses.
The smoke could be seen for miles.
It took about two hours to bring the fire under control. Crews remained for several additional hours to watch for any signs of fire, Craner said.
The home suffered severe damage to the attic and part of the roof collapsed. Smoke and water caused damage throughout the home.
Three people live in the home, none of whom were injured. Representatives from the local chapter of the American Red Cross later arrived to assist them.
