NY Chief: Fire Caused $1M Damage to Building Under Construction

Nov. 20, 2023
A passerby noticed the fire just after 4;30 a.m. and Getzville firefighters found heavy fire from the three-story multi-unit home under construction.

Editor's note: The three-story building was a multi-family structure, not a single-family dwelling as first reported.

Nov. 19—A fire in an Amherst home that was under construction caused $1 million in damages but resulted in no injuries, fire officials said Sunday.

A passerby called 911 at 4:39 a.m. Sunday after seeing flames at a home on Skinnersville Road near Sweet Home Road, according to a news release sent by the Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office.

The Getzville fire chief "reported heavy fire conditions in the roof area of a three-story wood frame structure under construction," the news release stated. Because of the building's size and "heavy fire conditions," the chief requested a second alarm to the scene.

The fire was controlled by 6:34 a.m. and there were no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at $1 million and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Amherst Fire Inspector's Office.
