Two people are lucky to be alive after an off-duty Crains Creek firefighter and his wife pulled them from a burning vehicle as the New Year began.

Crains Creek firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident at midnight Thursday and responding crews were notified that vehicle was on fire.

"Upon arrival, a single vehicle accident involving a car versus trees was confirmed, with the vehicle fully involved and a small grass fire also burning. The two occupants were outside the vehicle and lying on the ground," the department shared in a Facebook post.

Firefighters began treating the victims while others used a hoseline to knock down the fire.

Crain Creek firefighter Dylan Turney, who is a career firefighter with Spout Springs Emergency Services, heard the accident and rushed to the scene. Turney and his wife, Kiersten, who lived nearby, removed the occupants when they found the vehicle on fire.

Both victims were transported to the trauma center by ambulance.
