A pile of cars at an auto wrecking yard in northeast Portland caught fire Monday, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the sky which was visible for miles.

The blaze eventually spread to a nearby apartment building and duplex, destroying eight to 10 units.

Portland Fire and Rescue said battling the fire was complicated by 20 to 25 mph winds and water-supply problems in the area.
