NJ Crews Run Hose Through SUV Blocking Hydrant

Jan. 26, 2020
When Camden firefighters responded to a blaze at an "occupied dwelling," they encountered a vehicle blocking a nearby hydrant. Video footage from the scene shows their solution to the problem.

The shortest route between two points is a straight line, and New Jersey firefighters proved that during a fire call Saturday.

Camden crews were responding to a fire that broke out at an "occupied dwelling," an online post by Camden Fire Officers, Local 2758, stated. The problem: An SUV was blocking a needed hydrant at the scene.

In a video posted on the fire union page, firefighters broke the vehicle's front-side windows before running a hose through them to the hydrant.

"Water supply is critical to safely mitigating a fire emergency," a Camden official told WCAU-TV. "As such, it is important for the public to be aware that it is never a good idea to block hydrants. Lives are at stake."

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it reached the cockloft, the union stated. No one was hurt in the incident.
