Boston firefighters battled fires that erupted from two manholes following explosions that blew off at least one cover, sending it 30 feet in the air Tuesday.
Crews were called in about 3:15 p.m. after reports of smoke coming from several manholes along Charles Street, near the city's Charles/MGH Red Line Station, WBZ-TV reports. Once at the scene, firefighters noticed buckling around the manholes and used foam on the flames.
The explosions were caused by an equipment failure, and they temporarily closed several roads and the station, WBZ added.
