Blaze Consumes Over 3,000 Cars at FL Rental Parking Lot

Firefighters from three counties and a helicopter battled flames as they consumed 3,500 vehicles at Southwest Florida International Airport.

Editor's note: It was originally reported that 100 vehicles burned, but fire officials later confirmed that over 3,500 vehicles burned.

A helicopter was called to help firefighters contain a blaze that spread through a parking lot full of cars at Southwest Florida International Airport in Lee County Friday.

The fire burned up to 15 acres, including the overflow parking lot where the fire started before it spread to the adjacent woods, according to the Florida Forest Service.

All fire departments in Lee County were called to the scene, in addition to units from Charlotte and Collier, plus a sheriff''s helicopter to perform water drops.  

The fire burned for more than 12 hours.
