Boston Firefighters Rescue Two from 2-Alarm Apartment Blaze
Boston firefighters saved two people from a two-alarm blaze that broke out at a five-story apartment building Wednesday.
The department received a call at about 7:30 a.m. concerning a fire at an 18-unit building on Charles Street in the city's Beacon Hill area, WHDH-TV reports. Two people were inside the building when the blaze broke out, and crews led the occupants down a fire escape to the ground.
“The time of day helped us and the fact that traffic in general is still a little bit down, but as you can see all the buildings are tight, and we worry about extension of the fire, which is why I struck a second alarm right away,” Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer told WCVB-TV.
A woman, 27, suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital. Details were not released concerning the other person rescued.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it started in a dryer in the basement, which sustained significant smoke and water damage, WCVB added.
