New Haven firefighters and Macomb County Sheriff's Office deputies pulled two families—two adults and five children—from a two-story apartment building.

Michigan firefighters and sheriff's deputies saved two families trapped in a burning apartment early Thursday.

The fire broke out at around 6 a.m. in the Pine Wood Apartments, according to the New Haven Fire Department. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office was first at the scene, and deputies rescued a man and three children a first-floor apartment.

When New Haven crews arrived, they found a woman and two children in a second-floor unit. Firefighters, along with help from sheriff's deputies, rescued the three occupants, needing to use a second-floor window to get two of the people out of the apartment.

The woman and two children were taken to the hospital by Richmond Lenox EMS and are expected to recover. A sheriff's deputy also was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Ray and Lenox Township fire departments assisted New Haven firefighters in putting out the blaze.
