Canadian firefighters from multiple departments battled a massive blaze that ravaged a waterfront boardwalk and pier that was a popular tourist attraction.

The fire broke out late Sunday at Westminster Pier Park in New Westminster, British Columbia, CBC reports. Flames stretched several blocks and engulfed the eastern end of the waterfront boardwalk, tearing through the oldest parts of the pier.

Crews from the New Westminster Fire Department and nearby cities responded to the fire. The glow of the fire could be seen in Surrey, across the Fraser River.

Officials told CBC that the fire could burn for days because the flames had worked into the creosote pilings. Raw video posted on online by Helix Maxter shows firefighters working to put out the blaze.

"The fire is being contained to the old part of the pier, but it is likely the old pier of the park will be completely destroyed," Mayor Jonathan Cote wrote in an online update.
