Three Oklahoma firefighters were injured and one person was killed following an explosion at a burning residence Thursday.
Crews responded to a fire at a single-story home in Owasso at about 6 p.m., according to the Owasso Reporter. A woman in her 80s and her son, who used a wheelchair, were inside the house at the time.
Firefighters were able to pull the woman to safety, but when they went back to rescue the son, the house exploded, KJRH-TV reports. The blast killed the son, and officials believe the blaze was sparked when a cigarette was lit near the son's medical equipment.
“He was on oxygen, and the fire pressurized the tanks that caused the explosion,” Fire Chief David Hurst told the Reporter.
Three firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries and eventually released. The mother suffered smoke inhalation, and she also was taken to the hospital.
