Cleveland firefighters hosed down a man covered in gasoline and threatening to set himself on fire during a standoff with authorities last week.
Newly released body camera captured the harrowing Dec. 4 incident at the Catholic Charities offices. A man walked into the building and doused himself and the lobby with gasoline before threatening to set himself on fire with a lighter, WOIO-TV reports.
“There’s a man in our office trying to burn himself alive. It smells like gas, and it looks like he’s trying to set himself on fire," a caller to 9-1-1 said.
In the video released by Cleveland police, officers are seen trying to calm the man down before firefighters break through a door and turn a hose on the man. That let officers apprehend the man without igniting the gasoline.
The man was taken to the hospital. No one else was injured.
"We are grateful to the City of Cleveland Police and Fire Department for their swift assistance," Catholic Charities said in a statement.
