OH Volunteer Firefighter Injures Knee During Fire

Dec. 29, 2020
Wind created a challenge for Weathersfield firefighters who battled a fire that broke out in a garage before flames spread to the house.

An Ohio firefighter was injured during a residential fire early Monday.

The fire broke out at about 5 a.m. in the garage of a house in Weathersfield Township, WKBN-TV reports. Flames spread to the first floor and continued traveling up in the house.

Volunteer firefighter Michael Chambers suffered a knee injury and was taken to the hospital. He is expected to recover.

“We risk our lives and safety sometimes to keep our community safe," Chambers said in a statement to WKBN. "We don’t think about ourselves, we think about the people around us and what we can do to make their lives better. I decided to become a firefighter because I feel honored serving my community."

Four people were inside the house at the time of the fire, and they were able to escape on their own. Wind created a challenge for firefighters trying to put out the flames.

“Very difficult," Weathersfield Fire Chief Tom Lambert told WKBN. "Not only with the weather, but still being the holiday season, you hate to see somebody lose their home, and this home here will be a total loss.”
