The two-alarm fire at a 24-unit apartment building happened during an especially busy shift for Concord firefighters, who already had responded to nearly 40 calls.

Two New Hampshire firefighters were injured battling a two-alarm apartment fire Monday.

Concord Fire Department crews responded to a call just before 11:40 p.m. involving a fire at a 24-unit apartment building, the department stated in an online update. Once they arrived, they encountered flames and smoke coming from the second and third floors, as well as the attic.

The remaining occupants inside the building were quickly evacuated, and firefighters rescued several pets. A second alarm eventually was called, which brought crews from additional fire companies to the scene.

Two firefighters suffered injuries during the call and taken to the hospital, according to the department. One firefighter suffered second-degree burns, and another injured his knee. An occupant also was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

The call came during an especially busy shift for Concord firefighters. By the time of the apartment fire, crews had already responded to 37 incidents, including 20 EMS requests, nine outside fires, several fire alarms and a traffic accident, the department stated.
