11 FDNY Firefighters Injured Battling 4-Alarm Fire

Crews were involved in "a labor-intensive, time-consuming operation" when they responded to the blaze that erupted at a Bronx furniture store.

A four-alarm fire in the Bronx injured 11 FDNY firefighters Sunday.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. at a furniture store, WCBS-TV reports. When crews arrived, they encountered "a significant volume" of flames in the basement and the first floor.

“It was a labor-intensive, time-consuming operation that was further challenged by the prevailing weather conditions," Assistant Chief Joseph Jardin said in a statement. "Our troops engaged in extensive opening up of walls and ceilings, eventually stretching five hand-lines to fully extinguish the fire."

EMS workers treated 11 firefighters at the scene, according to Jardin. The injuries weren't considered life-threatening, and it's not clear if any firefighters were taken to the hospital.

Jardin told WCBS that the humidity and heat created challenges for crews. The fire was extinguished by 5 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
