Michigan firefighters worked for nearly 12 hours to control a massive fire that erupted at an apartment complex late Wednesday.
The fire broke out shortly before 11:30 p.m. at the Westwood Village Apartments in Westland, WJBK-TV reports. Heavy flames tore through one building before spreading to two others.
"It started in the center building here and got in the attic space, and we had a hard time containing it once that happened," Westland Assistant Fire Chief Kelly Eggers told WJBK. "There's no firewalls in these apartments, so once it gets there, it's easily spread to the other units."
Roughly 100 residents were evacuated from the complex, and the fire damaged 36 units. No injuries were reported during the call.
"A big ole' ball of orange blaze, that's all I can describe it as," Justin Johnson, a witness who lives near the apartments, told WJBK.
The fire is under investigation, and officials are looking at roof work being done at the complex as a possible cause.
