Two Worcester firefighters sustained minor injuries after officials were dispatched to a structure fire that leveled a retail building Monday night.
After around 6 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 812 Pleasant St., Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche said. Fire crews saw smoke billowing from the building’s interior through the structure’s side, making access through the building’s basement difficult.
It took fire crews six and a half hours to battle the fire, which was elevated from a second-alarm fire to three alarms, Roche added. By 3 a.m., it was determined the building was a total loss and it was leveled. By 6:45 a.m., he confirmed that the fire was fully extinguished.
Two firefighters received minor injuries, Roche said, and a third was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
“Fighting this fire proved extremely difficult,” Roche said. “We did have concerns about adjacent properties, both of those properties didn’t sustain any damage, it was just the occupancy of origin.”
The retail building was part of a three-business strip mall, Roche said. Located at this address is U-Home Decor, along with Worcester Flower Shop nearby.
As of 6:45 a.m., one fire crew was at the site of the fire putting up a fence around the property, Roche said. What caused the fire is under investigation.
