A dozen boats docked in Long Beach’s Alamitos Bay were damaged or destroyed in a fire Monday morning, May 8, authorities said.

Long Beach firefighters responded to the 100 block of North Marine Drive about 1:15 a.m. and found the Duffy boats on fire, Capt. Jack Crabtree said.

Duffy vessels are small boats often used to leisurely cruise about channels and marinas.

The fires were put out by about 1:40 a.m., but four or five of the boats have since sunk, Crabtree said.

No injuries were reported and no nearby buildings were damaged, the captain said.

Long Beach police and the Harbor Patrol were on scene to direct boat traffic in that part of the marina during the investigation and oversee efforts to clean up debris, Crabtree said. A boom was set up around the area to keep debris from floating into the channel.

Investigators were working to determine the cause and the origin of the fire, Crabtree said.
