A Public Storage facility in south San Jose went up in flames Wednesday evening, with fire officials upgrading it from a two-alarm to a three-alarm blaze after firefighters had battled it for nearly two hours.
“There are audible explosions coming from the building,” San Jose Fire Department public-information manager Jake Pisani said just after 7 p.m.
The fire at 88 Blossom Hill Road, near Monterey Highway, was reported at 6:05 p.m., Pisani said, adding that the size of the explosions or what caused them was unclear.
By shortly after 7 p.m., the fire was not under control and appeared to be consuming storage units, Pisani said.The department first reported the fire as a two alarm, but at 7:45 p.m., the department tweeted that it had upgraded the fire to a three alarm.
San Jose police advised drivers to avoid the area.
