Syracuse, N.Y. — A person was rescued from an apartment building Wednesday after fire and smoke filled a hallway leading to the exit.

Around 6:41 a.m., firefighters responded to an apartment building at 111 Smith Lane for a report of a structure fire, said Deputy Fire Chief Nick Pagano, a Syracuse Fire Department spokesperson.

When fire crews arrived, they saw wispy smoke coming from the entrance of the building, Pagano said. Once inside the building, firefighters realized they had a larger fire than they initially thought inside the doorway.

Another deputy chief walked to the back side of the building where he saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor. The chief also saw two people hanging out of windows, Pagano said. Firefighters then called for additional crews, he said.

The deputy chief said firefighters used a ladder to help a person down from a second-floor window while another person walked out of the building on their own. One was treated by emergency crews on the scene and the other refused care, he said.

It took firefighters 10 minutes to extinguish the fire contained to the hallway, Pagano said.

Fire investigators were on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
