A cylinder explosion at the General Motors Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit and Hamtramck sent an employee to the hospital on Thanksgiving Day.

The explosion happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. The worker with non-life-threatening injuries was transported to a hospital, Fire Department spokesperson Cory McIsaac said in a text message.

GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly confirmed the incident.

"Safety is our overriding priority, and we will continue to investigate the cause of the incident," he said in an email. Details about the explosion and the impact on plant operations, were not immediately released.

The GM facility at 2500 E. Grand Blvd., which opened in 1985, reopened as a dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant in 2021.

McIsaac said the explosion was not related to electric vehicle batteries.
