Greene County, VA, Officials Pull Plug on Volunteer Fire Department

May 28, 2025
Ruckersville firefighters say they should be allowed to respond while a review of its operation is underway.

All Ruckersville Volunteer Fire Company members want do is what they've been doing for years -- respond to emergencies.

But right now, they can't.

The Greene County Board of Supervisors have pulled the plug -- at least for the time being, WVIR reported.

Among the issues officials cited as the reasons include alleged operational deficiences as well as concerns about training and if financial records are being monitored.

“They said they want to have a due diligence review. We’re fine. Review everything. Let us respond while you’re reviewing," Ruckersville Fire Company President Harold Richards said, adding they were notified by letter of the supervisors' decision.

"I don’t know if I can say that without really tearing up. I’ve been doing this for 30 years."

The president said members are ready to answer the calls for help as well as questions from the politicians.
