Colorado Springs to Cut Fire Training Academy Due to Budget Woes

"To not have an academy next year really equates to $1.1 million, Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal said.

Rookies will graduate next week from the Colorado Springs Fire Training Academy -- the last in the near future.

“We decided that we had to look at all the different options. We did across the board. To not have an academy next year really equates to that 1.1 million," Fire Chief Randy Royal told KKTV.

"We don’t expect any kind of response time changes to what we have now. And we’re gonna maintain that at all of our stations, and also with our auxiliary units as well,” Royal said, adding that during the 2008 recession training was called off four years.

“That is tough because that really took us about 10 years to get caught up from that. We definitely don’t wanna be in that same situation."
