Ashmore firefighters will likely remember a house fire they handled Tuesday -- for what they saved that brought tears to a man.

As they sifted through debris, Capt. Jake Johnson said he saw something move. It was a cat. He returned it to David Huffman, the homeowner, who was nearby.

But the next find was just as if not more cherished -- the service flag presented to the Huffman family when his father-in-law, a Navy veteran, died, WCIA reported.

Seeing the flag pulled from the flames on Veterans Day brought tears to the Navy veteran.

“It makes this old veteran pretty proud, you know it really does.”
