Three people were injured in a fire at a vacant building near North Saddle Creek Road and Hamilton Street.

Omaha firefighters responded to the scene around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday and found heavy smoke coming from the building.

Multiple people were seen exiting the building and signaled to firefighters that there were still people inside, according to a press release.

Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Kurt Theiler said several homeless people were in the building at the time of the fire, but was not able to give an exact number.

Three people were taken to the hospital for further evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire caused about $8,000 worth of damage to the building.

The cause is still under investigation.
