A massive six-alarm blaze ripped through a warehouse in Roselle Park on Thursday evening and caused concerns about air quality for residents in the area.

Flames broke out around 4:45 p.m. at a large warehouse-style building located at 140 Valley Road, Roselle Park Mayor Joseph Signorello Jr. told NJ Advance Media Thursday night.

Signorello said the building is occupied by Crossfield Products Corp, a company that produces “a variety of construction coating, overlay, and fluid-applied flooring materials,” according to its website.

“There were a lot of explosions internally,” Signorello said. “They do make resins, oil-based paints. Nobody got hurt (inside the building). We evacuated the homes across the street.”

Signorello, who took over as Roselle Park mayor on Dec. 18 after his son, Joseph Signorello III, resigned to become a Union County Commissioner, said there were no reports of injuries among firefighters and emergency personnel.

He said a preliminary investigation on the cause of the fire was unclear.

In addition to the Roselle Park Fire Department, numerous local fire departments, including Kenilworth, Westfield, Linden, Roselle and Cranford, assisted in the multiple-alarm fire, Signorello said.

As of 9:15 p.m., Signorello said in a Facebook post the fire was under control.

“I’m glad to report there were no fatalities,’' he said.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area of West Westfield and Valley roads as they contained the multiple-alarm fire.

“Residents are asked to please avoid the area and residents living in the west end of town are asked to keep windows and doors closed as air quality may be diminished due to heavy smoke,” Roselle Park police said in a Thursday evening Facebook post.

Signorello said Union County hazmat officials were on the scene “monitoring for the community and for the fire department personnel on the street.”

He said the neighboring homes and buildings were not affected by the fire.

“Please pray for our families in Roselle Park and families in the area,” Roselle Park Councilman Gregory Johnson said on social media.
