Air Monitored in Mobile, AL, as Vehicles Burn on Barge

Efforts to quell the flames by Mobile Fire Rescue crews and the U.S. Coast Guard have been unsuccessful.

A burning barge on the Mobile River continues to spread a stench across the city.

Efforts by Mobile Fire Rescue crews and the U.S. Coast Guard to extinguish the fire that involves old vehicles have proved unsuccessful.

Officials now say it will conitnue to burn until it burns itself out, which they have no idea how long it will take, WKRG reported Tuesday morning.

Overnight, it was pused to the riverbank to allow other vessels to pass through the area.

Environmental officials are monitoring the smoke and stench.
