Instincts kicked in when a Greg Degreeff when one of his kids spotted smoke near their house.

"I saw him and his wife here usually. I just asked, ‘Where’s your wife?’ And he said she was still inside..."

Without hesitation, the off-duty Pattonville firefighter went in the back door. He called out until he found her, and guided her out, FOX 2 reported.

“Right as I got her out, I turned around to see if I could go back in. But the smoke was already down to the ground. There was no going back in.”

Degreeff reflected on the incident: “It could have been terrible and tragic. At the end of the day, they’re dealing with the unfortunate side of insurance instead of hosting a funeral.”
