Growing CO Wildland Fire Claims Structures, Forces Evacuations

The fire affecting Howard, Pine Ridge, Wellsville and Swissvale areas is about five percent contained and has burned about 6,000 acres.

Oct. 5--Two structures have been destroyed near Salida as the Decker fire continues to burn in south central Colorado, the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff John Spezze confirmed on Facebook that one structure on private land, outside the evacuation area, was lost in Chaffee County. The announcement comes after officials at a community meeting Saturday morning confirmed a cabin sitting on private land surrounded by forest in Bear Creek in Fremont County was destroyed by the wildfire.

Fire officials issued pre-evacuation notices on Friday to residents in Howard, Pine Ridge, Wellsville and Swissvale as they anticipated the Decker fire to push eastward Saturday.

The fire remains at 5,921 acres and 5% containment, according to the Decker Fire Information Office. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. as strong winds and low humidity make for high fire danger.

Evacuations have not been issued for Salida, officials said Saturday morning during a public meeting streamed on Facebook. Officials said the fire was less active Friday than on previous days, with helicopters able to drop water over the fire for most of the day. More than 700 people are now working on fighting the flames, which has been burning since a lightning strike on Sept. 8.

More information can be found on Facebook and the fire incident website.
