Los Angeles Brush Fires Threaten Celebrities' Homes

Oct. 22, 2019
Evacuations were issued for parts of the city's Pacific Palisades neighborhood, home to multi-million-dollar mansions owned by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Firefighters have spent several hours Monday battling a brush fire in an oceanfront neighborhood in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. local time and engulfed 18 acres in 15 minutes.

While no injuries have been reported, the fire has since spread to 30 acres in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood littered with multi-million-dollar mansions that stars like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon call home.

Some residents have evacuated but no structures have been damaged so far. The LAFD did issue mandatory evacuations for certain parts of the area.

“All persons in this area are directed to leave NOW in a calm and orderly manner," one warning read. "This is due to both potential fire and smoke behavior as well as the pending arrival of large fixed-wind retardant dropping aircraft.”

More than 300 firefighters are expected to battle the blaze throughout the night on the ground and from the air.

Plumes of smoke from the fire were visible from miles away.

The LAFD noted that the neighborhood was compliant with brush clearing rules which was keeping the fire from spreading faster.

No cause for the fire has been released.
