An Australian volunteer firefighter was killed and two more suffered burns after their apparatus rolled over while battling bushfires Monday.

Extreme winds were blamed for the accident, which happened near Jingellic, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service stated in an online post. The firefighters had been battling the Green Valley Fire about 45 miles east of Albury in New South Wales.

The crash comes a day after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that unpaid volunteer firefighters battling the wildfires ravaging the country would be compensated. Volunteers, who make up 90 percent of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, will be able to claim $300 a day, with a maximum of $6,000, according to dpa International.
