CA Firefighters Contain 2-Alarm Brush Fire Ignited by Car Crash

July 10, 2020
Alameda County firefighters battled a large vegetation that broke out following a vehicle accident and grew to more than 200 acres before crews could contain it.

A car crash east of Livermore ignited a brush fire that temporarily shut down I-580 at Altamont Pass overnight and grew to more than 100 acres before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

Alameda County Fire arrived at the scene off Flynn Road North just after midnight and quickly called a second alarm as high winds and dry vegetation in the area allowed the fire to spread. The flames, moving north, eventually jumped I-580, causing firefighters to shut down the freeway in all directions.

The blaze grew to 222 acres before crews were able to contain it.

By 4:30 a.m., all lanes of the freeway had reopened but traffic was still moving slowly through the area.

Information on the condition of the driver was not immediately available.
