Historic Big Sur, CA, Cabin Wrapped in Fire-Resistant Material
The historic Pfieffer Cabin in Big Sur was wrapped with a fire-resistant materal prior to a backburn as the Plaskett and Timber fires continue to burn.
Firefighters and state park officials spent three hours wrapping the 1884 Pfieffer Homestead Cabin, KSBW reported.
"It looks like tinfoil, but it is a fire retardant material that can really withstand a lot of heat," explained Joe Zwierzchowski, Timber and Plaskett Fires spokesperson.
The cabin, built by John Pfieffer, has been part of the park’s history for generations.
Chief Ranger for California State Parks Monterey Districk Mike Dippel said: "It’s really important to our department’s mission to tell the story of things like the homestead cabin, and to keep them standing and put the effort into protecting them when wildfire comes through."
"The fire departments that were involved in this, the entire incident did a really great job of protecting not only the homestead cabin, but all of our state park infrastructure and state residences, the Big Sur Lodge and other buildings we have here in the par," he added.
