Smithsburg, MD- April 23, Crews from Washington and Franklin County Fire and Rescue Companies were awaken early for a House Fire at 13221 Edgemont Road outside of Smithsburg.
Washington County 911 took calls reporting the house on fire with one occupant missing. Crews were alerted at 3:14 am for the fire with possible entrapment.
Assistant Chief Jon Snyder of Smithsburg EMS arrived first on the scene to find heavy fire. He immediately reported his findings to Fire Dispatch.
After assessing the scene it was found that all occupants had safely exited the residence. One occupant was scene by EMS crews on the scene and later transported to Washington County Trauma Center for check up.
Fire crews arriving on the scene made an aggressive attack and were able to knock a bulk of the fire down. Chief Steve Lewis of Smithsburg Fire arrived on the scene and placed Edgemont Command into effect.
While crews were working on the first floor and venting the roof, the second floor area flashed and crews had heavy fire shooting out the windows and skylights.
Chief Lewis had all hands pull out and evacuate the structure.
Once the structure was evacuated, crews placed deck guns in-service to gain control of the fire. Crews were able to begin knocking the fire down enough that they were eventually able to re-enter the structure to fight the fire. Crews made entry on the first floor and through a second story wind. They were then able to get the fire knocked down by 4:32 am.
Crews remained on the scene for several hours overhauling and mopping up.
The Maryland State Fire marshals office is investigating the fire at this time.
Smithsburg EMS only transported one patient to Washington County and no other serious injuries were reported.
