A quick spreading fire gutted a vacant home on Youngstown's lower South side Sunday evening.
The fire caused quite a bit of anxiety for the neighbor given the fact that only a small driveway separated her house from the burning structure.
At 10:00pm April 17th, fire crews were alerted to a vacant structure fire in the 500 block of Garfield, on the lower Southside of town. Crews had already been summoned to four other possible structure fires since 5pm with none amounting to anything serious.
Engines 2, 3 and 7; Squad 33; Ladders 22 and 24; and Battalions 1 and 2, were dispatched to 520 Garfield.
Battalion 2, Chief Rosa, arrived on scene and reported a fully involved vacant 2 story wood frame residential with exposure problems. Due to the amount of fire, exterior operations only, were ordered. Lines were pulled off Engines 2, and 7, and Ladder 24 to control the fire and protect the adjacent home.
Engine 7's deck gun was also brought into operation. Since the house was vacant, the department let the house burn. Around midnight, most of the fire was knocked down and crews began clearing the scene.
Ladder 22 was repositioned and set up to give remaining crews a better vantage point to extinguish the remaining hot spots. Emergency demolition was requested and the fire investigation bureau was notified.
