Hagerstown, MD- Crews from Funkstown and Hagerstown were alerted at 1:24 pm for a house fire at 2524 Blue Bird Drive. Chief John Gift of Funkstown was approaching the scene and reported heavy smoke showing. Chief 10 arrived on the scene with a working structure fire reporting a two story dwelling well involved. Chief Gift placed Command into effect.
Crews arriving on the scene were in defensive mode due to the intensity of the fire. Crews immediately began pulling lines and protecting surrounding exposures. Deck gun and ladder pipe operations were placed in effect as the Engines from 10 and Engine 3 and Truck 1 out of Hagerstown arrived on the scene. Multiple hand lines were also in-service to assist with gaining control of the fire from the exterior of the structure.
Command requested additional resources to the scene to assist. A Medic unit from CRS along with Rescue Squad 75 for R.I.T. and the Washington County Air Unit were started. Crews from Funkstown and Hagerstown were also assisted by Smithsburg Fire Company 7 who responded with Engine Tanker 7 to assist in water supply. Rehab Unit 255 was also on the incident to assist with rehab.
Command reported the house to be a total loss. The fire is believed to have begun in the garage and quickly spread through out the house. The house was completely gutted along with two vehicles in the driveway being heavily damaged. The family was able to escape the blaze with out injury thanks to their neighbors who alerted them to the fire. No injuries were reported and Red Cross is assisting the family.
The Maryland State Fire Marshals Office responded to the incident and is conducting their investigation.
