Mechanicstown Firefighters Respond to Fatal Tractor Trailer Accident on I-84 in New York

Once the county coroner arrived and confirmed the fatality, firefighters began the extrication of the heavily entrapped truck driver.

Shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2005, the Mechanicstown & Maybrook Fire Departments were alerted about a tractor trailer that had struck a bridge abutment on I-84 westbound at the Bart Bull Road overpass in the Town of Wallkill.

Maybrook Chief Charles Woznick arrived and confirmed a serious accident with entrapment and obvious fatality. Mechanicstown Assistant Tim Sabo arrived on scene and assumed command. Crews began to secure many existing hazards at the scene.

The Town of Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Mobile Life Support Services were also at the scene.

After approximately 40 minutes, the truck driver was removed and the New York State Police Accident Investigation Team took over and the Fire Department units secured.
