A 33-year-old motorist was cited in connection with a traffic accident that caused an ambulance carrying a teenage patient with its lights and sirens on to flip over and plow into a traffic pole on the South Side Sunday afternoon.
Several injuries were reported, including two paramedics and a police officer.
John Ciciora, of the 10600 block of South Christiana Avenue, was cited with disobeying a red light, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and damage to city property, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
Ciciora was slated to appear in Traffic Court on Oct. 24 on the charges, according to Alfaro.
The accident occurred at West 111th Street and South Talman Avenue around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, according to police News Affairs Officer Kristina Schuler.
An ambulance, transporting a 16-year-old patient, was heading west on 111th Street when Ciciora, driving a Toyota sedan north on South Talman Avenue, collided with the ambulance at the intersection, according to reports from police News Affairs.
The ambulance, which was headed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, had its light and sirens on when the vehicle failed to yield to the ambulance, Schuler said.
A police officer was inside the ambulance when the collision occurred, Schuler said.
The patient was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in an unknown condition, Schuler said. Two paramedics and the police officer were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in an unknown condition.
Ciciora was taken in "stable" condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
