On Monday, September 11 2006, Wicomico County Central alerted Stations 6 (Parsonsburg), 2 and 1 (Salisbury) to a structure fire at the Perdue Farms Grain Facility. Salisbury Engine 161 was in the area attending September 11 Memorial observances at Perdue Stadium (home of the Baltimore Orioles "A" affiliate Delmarva Shorebirds) and responded as well.
Engine 161 arrived and reported a well involved fire in a structure containing saw dust shavings used as chicken house litter. The crew of Engine 161 and the Perdue Fire Brigade began to attack the fire. Parsonsburg Engine 605 arrived and took a position on side C and made an attack from this position. Salisbury Truck 2 (quint) began a ladder pipe operation on side B making a good knock on the fire while the engine companies worked from the proximity of bay doorways.
Parsonsburg Tanker 608 established a draft site 100 yards from the fire building. Large diameter hose was also used augmenting the Perdue water system. Units operated for several hours removing the litter and dousing the litter with water. The Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office is investigating.
