The morning of June 19, 2006 at 0615 hrs Riverside County Fire Department of California, responded to a tanker trucker carrying Jet fuel over turned at the Hwy 62 and Interstate10 transition. The crash resulted in the product spilling out and igniting. The ensuing fire spread to a U-haul that was attempting to go around the accident.
The initial response of ME (medic engine) 36 and ME 24 was eventually upgraded and eventually consisted of six engine companies, 2 HazMat units, 3 water tenders and an ARFF unit from Palm Springs International airport (Palm Springs Fire Dept.).
An initial attempt was made to save the U-haul but it was later deemed more risk than gain. A command decision was made to let the product burn itself out. This lead to the complete closure of I-10 in both directions for approximately 3 hours.
