On Friday May 19, 2006, Firefighters from Union Colony Fire Rescue Authority in Greeley, Colorado responded to a structure fire in the 4900 Block of 8th St.
While enroute crews reported heaving smoke visible from blocks away. When they arrived, fire crews were met by very heavy fire and smoke conditions and the decision was made to call for a second alarm to bring more resources to the scene.
First arriving crews quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack utilizing 2 ½ inch hose lines.
The fire was threatening a second adjacent structure and crews quickly applied water to prevent the spread of fire. Because of heavy fire conditions, incident commander Rick Hinchcliffe called for a defensive strategy just prior to a partial collapse of the attached garage.
No injuries to citizens or firefighters were reported and property damage is estimated at $250,000.
Several pets were lost in the blaze however; one cat was found, and survived.
