On Saturday, March 13, 2004 around 10:00 am, the West Side Fire Department along with automatic mutual aid from the Lakewood Fire Department and the Tornado Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire in a four unit apartment building.
E-221 arrived on the scene with one first floor apartment well involved and fire extension to the second floor apartment above. Assistant Chief Robert Nutter established command and directed his crew to stretch two hose lines and begin attacking the fire, while E-224 established a 5" supply line.
Shortly into the fire, additional help was requested from the Jefferson Fire Department and the Institute Fire Department. Also, the Teays Valley and Hurricane Fire Departments were moved up to cover the areas of those departments committed to the fire.
The first floor fire was extinguished with very little problems, but the second floor extension proved to be much tougher. A ventilation team was sent to the roof, while hose teams worked inside the second floor apartment to bring the fire under control.
All residence of the building escaped safely prior to the arrival of the first engine. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for observation.
