At around 8:15 am Kenilworth's volunteer fire department was dispatched to 25 North 20th Street on a reported working fire in a 2 1/2 story wood frame house. Engine 4, the first due company found a heavy fire condition on the second floor with fire blowing out and threatening the "D" exposure. With very limited man power Engine 4 mounted an attack and covered the exposures with a great degree of success until help arrived from mutual aid.
While monitoring the Union County radio the Deputy Chief from Union responded directly into Kenilworth with orders for Union to send in a Taskforce to assist Kenilworth, Battalion Chief 4 along with two Engines and a Truck moved up to assist.
The Union County Mutual Aid System sent three more Engines directly to the scene from Roselle Park, Cranford and Roselle for manpower along with several MAC's (Mutual Aid Coordinators). Westfield and Summit Engine Companies along with a Truck from Elizabeth covered the town.
