New York City Firefighters Battle Second Serious Fire On the Island This Year
New York City firefighters in the normally tranquil community of City Island in the Bronx fought their second serious fire on the island this year.
The latest blaze, a one alarm fire, erupted on Sunday, afternoon, April 2nd, in a frame structure at City Island Avenue and Schofield Street, a stones throw from the firehouse of Engine 70 and Ladder 53.
Responding on a verbal alarm from their quarters, the units immediately transmitted the "All Hands" signal for the fully involved 40x40 building, and also requested an additional engine and truck.
Firefighters utilized an exterior attack with two tower ladders and several handlines to extinguish the fire before it could extend to any exposures. Six engines, four trucks, one heavy rescue, one squad, two battalion chiefs, a deputy chief, and a satellite unit responded to the incident.
Earlier in the year, Engine 70 and Ladder 53 arrived at what would become a fourth alarm fire in a large wooden mansion style building near the very end of the island.
