On Sunday, February 15, 2004, at 17:33 hours, the Town of Beloit (WI) Fire Department received a call for a garage fire approximately 5 feet from a residence.
Automatic mutual aid was also received from Turtle Fire Department for a Tanker and Engine.
Upon arrival of the first engine, crews found the detached garage fully involved with flames extending over the roof top of the residence.
Signs of radiant heat on the residence indicated the fire may have extended into the attic space of the home.
A second crew entered the residence while the primary attack on the garage began.
Crews held the fire causing only exterior damage to the home.
Several acetylene tanks inside the garage along with fuel storage hampered firefighters during the first several minutes of the fire.
This was in a rural setting requiring a tanker operation. Temperatures at the time of the call were in the single digits with winds out of the North.
One firefighter was transported to an area hospital and later released for minor burns.
The owner of the residence was utilizing a wood burning stove prior to the discovery of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
