Philly Firefighters Battle Gas Main Fire

On Feb. 13, 2004 at 16:50 Philadelphia Fire Units were dispatched to the intersection of Ogontz Ave & Olney Ave in the city. Battalion 2 arrived on scene and struck the second alarm for heavy fire showing from a ruptured gas line.Also See: Complete Slideshow

On Feb. 13, 2004 at 16:50 Philadelphia Fire Units were dispatched to the intersection of Ogontz Ave & Olney Ave in the city.

Battalion 2 arrived on scene and struck the second alarm for heavy fire showing from a ruptured gas line.

Command advised of extremely heavy fire conditions in the intersection with several vehicles on fire and explosions.

The incident began when a water department work crew struck a 20" high pressure natural gas main.

The fumes found an ignition source and exploded.

A two block perimeter was evacuated as well as nearby high rise apartment buildings.

The incident went to four alarms, as companies protected nearby exposures with numerous master streams. No one was injured in the incident.
