Cumberland County, PA -- On Wednesday, February 11, 2004, the Upper Allen Township Fire Department and the Silver Springs Township Fire Department were dispatched at 5:27 PM to the exit ramp of the Pennsylavania Turnpike and Route 15 in Upper Allen Twp. for a reported vehicle accident with entrapment. Additional information, from a state trooper on the scene, reports a large Ryder truck overturned with entrapment.
Engine 1-23, engine 2-23, and engine 1-33 respond on the first dispatch and a Life Lion (Medivac) is placed on standby. First EMS units on the scene report two victims heavily entraped and may require extended extrication. Life Lion is now requested to fly to the scene per medic 82.
Chief 23 arrives on the scene and establishes command 23. Command assigns engine 1-23 to come directly to the scene and establish stabilization operations. The truck was stabilized with large wood cribbing and high lift truck jacks. Command then request squad 12 to the scene and assist with the difficult extrication. Engine 2-23 is told to establish a landing zone for Life Lion at the entrance of the Turnpike toll gates.
Command orders engine 1-33 to stage before the accident scene and to send its crew to engine 1-23 to assist with hazard control. Portable lighting was then set up onscene and a protection handline was put in place. Engine 2-23 assumed the duties of the landing zone officer and safely landed Life Lion in a nearby snow covered lot.
