At approximately 4:30 pm, on Thursday, March 2nd, Station 2 got dispatched to State Highway 259 and Alpine Road for a reported MVA.
Once enroute, dispatch upgraded the call to a jaws call. Upon arrival, Rescue 2 and Medic 2 found a full size van impaled by numerous logs from a tractor trailer that had been stopped at a red light. The van struck the rear of the trailer, impaling numerous trees through the front of the van and exiting out the rear. The driver was fatally impaled by a tree and was found at the rear of the van. Due to the nature of the extrication, the Special Operations Chief and Technical Rescue truck and trailer were dipatched for additional tools and cribbing.
The front of the van was approimately 18 inches off the ground and cribbed for safety.
Crews from E-1 and E-2 assisted with extrication of the patient.
Southbound lanes of Highway 259 were closed and diverted till approximately 8:15 pm that evening, pending accident investigations.
