On Saturday January 31, 2004 at 0737 hours, Atlanta Fire responded to a working fire in an abandoned one story single-family dwelling at 165 Walnut Street, SW.
The fire structure had severe exposures (similar single-family dwelling structures) on both the B and D sides.
Upon arrival, heavy fire conditions were found in the rear of the structure and both exposures were igniting simultaneously. Fire became involved in all three structures and a second alarm was dispatched to the scene. An aggressive attack was made inside both of the exposures to minimize any further fire extension.
The cause of fire is undetermined, with one female fatality in the original fire structure. The fatality was a vagrant living in the abandoned structure. With reports of several vagrants living inside the abandoned structure, an extensive secondary search was conducted using a cadaver dog and a backhoe to sift through the debris. No further findings were discovered during the secondary search.
