Three people were injured Friday morning when a Michigan City Fire truck crashed into a pickup truck at the intersection of Ohio Street and Earl Road in Michigan City.
The fire truck was responding in an emergency mode with all lights and sirens activated to a structure fire at a local restaurant in a strip mall complex when the accident occurred.
Engine 1 was headed south on Ohio Street at 7:53 am, when the traffic light turned green for east west traffic on Earl Road. Witnesses told police that the vehicles in the intersection were stopped at the intersection for the fire truck when a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado began to pass the stopped vehicles on the right and pulled into the path of the firetruck. The firetruck hit the pickup truck and slid sideways to a stop. The impact pushed the pickup truck into a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix that was headed northbound on Ohio Street but had pulled over and stopped for the firetruck.
Three people were transported to St. Anthony Memorial Health Center.
The injured included the driver of the pickup truck who complained of pain to the shoulder and upper arm. The driver of the Grand Prix complained of pain to the abdomen and pelvis, and a firefighter from Engine 1 suffered pain in his shoulder and chest.
None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.
All persons were wearing their seatbelts at the time, and the roads were rain covered from a cold, windy rain that plagued the area all day.
Heavy damage was reported to the Grand Prix and the Chevy Silverado, while fire officals stated the firetruck sustained only minor damage and continued to the fire scene after the accident was cleared.
Michigan City Police and LaPorte County EMS assisted at the scene.
